12-Week Photography Syllabus for Children/Teenagers (Ages 10–17)
Focus: Fundamentals, creativity, and confidence using any digital camera (DSLR, mirrorless, or smartphone)
Course Overview
This 12-week course introduces tweens and teenagers to the fundamentals of photography, combining technical skills with creative exploration.
Students will learn how to use a camera, understand light, compose compelling images, and develop their own visual style.
Week 1: Introduction to Photography
- What is photography? Types and styles
- Camera basics: parts and functions
- DSLR vs mirrorless vs smartphone
- Activity: “Photo Scavenger Hunt” (simple creative prompts)
Week 2: Understanding Exposure
- The Exposure Triangle: Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO
- How light affects images
- Practical demonstration
- Activity: Shoot the same subject with different exposures
Week 3: Aperture & Depth of Field
- What is aperture (f-stops)
- Background blur (bokeh) vs sharp focus
- Portrait vs landscape settings
- Activity: Portrait shoot with shallow vs deep depth of field
Week 4: Shutter Speed & Motion
- Freezing motion vs motion blur
- Capturing movement (sports, water, people)
- Creative effects (light trails, slow shutter)
- Activity: Motion photography challenge
Week 5: ISO & Low Light Photography
- Understanding ISO and noise
- Shooting in low light conditions
- Using natural vs artificial light
- Activity: Indoor or sunset shoot
Week 6: Composition Basics
- Rule of thirds
- Leading lines, symmetry, framing
- Perspective and angles
- Activity: Composition walk (outdoor shoot)
Week 7: Lighting Fundamentals
- Natural light vs artificial light
- Direction of light (front, side, backlight)
- Golden hour photography
- Activity: Outdoor portrait session
Week 8: Portrait Photography
- Working with people (posing & communication)
- Basic posing techniques
- Capturing emotion and expression
- Activity: Partner portrait shoot
Week 9: Street & Lifestyle Photography
- Storytelling through images
- Candid vs posed photography
- Ethics and respect in public shooting
- Activity: Street photography walk
Week 10: Editing & Post-Processing
- Introduction to editing (Lightroom / mobile apps)
- Basic adjustments: exposure, contrast, colour
- Cropping and straightening
- Activity: Edit 3 favourite photos
Week 11: Developing a Style
- What is a photographic style?
- Inspiration and mood boards
- Selecting your best work
- Activity: Create a mini photo series (5 images)
Week 12: Final Project & Showcase
- Present final photo series
- Group critique and feedback
- Celebrate progress and creativity
- Optional: Print or digital exhibition
